A street of local storefronts, the kind of business that competes in Google map results

The short version

For local service searches, the map pack sits above the regular results. Your Business Profile outranks your homepage.

Proximity, relevance, and prominence decide map rankings. You can only influence two of them.

Reviews that mention the specific service and the specific city move the needle most.

Service-area businesses should hide the address, not fake one.

If you do local SEO in Hampton Roads and you only have time for one thing, it is not your website. It is your Google Business Profile. When someone in Chesapeake searches for a plumber, the map pack with three listings sits above every regular search result. You can have the best site in the region and lose to a competitor with a worse site and a better-maintained profile.

Here is the order I work in, most important first.

Understand what you can actually influence

Google ranks local results on three factors. Proximity is how close you are to the searcher, and you cannot change it short of moving. Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched. Prominence is how well known and well regarded you appear to be. Relevance and prominence are where all of your effort should go.

This is also why you will never rank first across all of Hampton Roads from one Virginia Beach address. Someone searching in Newport News is 25 miles away. Aim to own your actual service radius, then expand with real content.

Fix the primary category first

Your primary category is the single strongest relevance signal on the profile, and it is the one most businesses get wrong. “Contractor” is not the same as “Roofing contractor.” Be as specific as the truth allows, then add secondary categories for the other services you actually perform.

Look at whoever currently ranks first for your main search. Their primary category is usually visible in the page source. Match specificity, do not guess.

Set the service area honestly

If customers come to you, show the address. If you go to them, hide the address and list service areas. List the cities you genuinely serve, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, and stop at the edge of where you will actually drive. Listing twenty cities you do not serve dilutes relevance and gets profiles suspended.

Do not rent a mailbox in another city to create a second listing. That is the single fastest way to lose the listing you already have.

Get reviews that say the right words

Review count and rating matter, but the text matters more than people realize. A review that says “Great work” helps less than one that says “replaced our water heater in Great Bridge the same day we called.” That second review contains the service and the location.

You cannot write reviews, and you should never offer anything in exchange for one. What you can do is ask at the right moment and make it specific. After a job goes well: “Would you mind leaving a Google review? If you can mention what we did and where you are, it genuinely helps other people nearby find us.” That one sentence changes what customers write.

Then reply to every review, including the bad ones, in plain language. Replies are public and they are read by the next customer deciding whether to call.

Use the parts of the profile everyone ignores

  • Services: list every service individually with a real description. These are searchable and most competitors leave this empty.

  • Products: works for service businesses too. Each one is another relevance signal.

  • Photos: add real ones monthly. Job sites, trucks, the team. Stock photography reads as stock photography.

  • Q&A: you are allowed to post and answer your own questions. Put the five things customers always ask here.

  • Posts: a short update every couple of weeks keeps the profile active.

  • Hours: keep them accurate, including holidays. Wrong hours generate one-star reviews.

Then make your website back it up

Once the profile is in order, your site’s job is to confirm it. That means a page for each significant service rather than one page listing all of them. It means your name, address, and phone number matching the profile exactly. It means saying where you work in the actual copy, the way a human would, rather than stuffing a footer with city names.

And it means embedding a map, listing real project locations, and writing about work you did in specific neighborhoods. That is the content no out-of-state competitor can fake.

What to expect

Category and service-area fixes can move rankings within a couple of weeks. Review momentum takes a few months. If someone promises you the top map spot in thirty days, they are either lying or about to do something that gets your listing suspended.

This is unglamorous work and it beats almost everything else you could spend the same hour on. Once it is done, the next lever is the site itself, and what that costs in this market is worth knowing before you start calling agencies.
